Guys, don't know what's up, but I've been having problems accessing the site off and on for a few days. Also, the posts aren't formatting correctly, so they're difficult to read.OK, on to substance. I don't disagree with much of what the Colonel said, but would make a few points:"Revolutionary" Islamic violence is not necessarily medieval; you can find some elaboration for it in the writings of Fanon on the liberation of Algeria. While not explicitly stated, and not Islamic, you can find the same issues in "Biko," the film about the murder of the anti-apartheid leader, in the discussion of differences between the ANC and other anti-apartheid forces over strategy.Nor is the extreme brutality that you decry solely the turf of Moslems, or Arabs, or the Middle East, nor is it medieval in a historical sense. Within the last 70 years we've had the rape of Nanking, the Holocaust, the Cambodian genocide, the Rwandan genocide, and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia. And the last was not just involving Moslems, who were more the victims than the perpertrators. Check out what the Catholic Croats and the Orthodox Serbs were doing to each other. I would also recommend "The Rape of Nanjing" by (I think) Irene Chang, which was very well-received. Random murder, mutilation of the dead, dismemberment, televised gore, and pride in stringing up the charred corpses of those who sought to bring food to the hungry? Perhaps we can shrug and say all this is the wage of Saddam Hussein and the thirty years of brutality of his Baathists that institutionalized such barbarity? Or was the carnage the dying scream of Baathist hold-outs intent on shocking the Western world at home watching it live? We could speculate for hours. Yet I fear that we have not seen anything new. Flip through the newspaper and the stories are as depressing as they are monotonous: bombs in Spain; fiery clerics promising death in England, even as explosive devices are uncovered in France. In-between accounts of bombings in Iraq, we get the normal murdering in Israel, and daily assassination in Pakistan, Turkey, Morocco, and Chechnya. Murder, dismemberment, torture—these all seem to be the acceptable tools of Islamic fundamentalism and condoned as part of justifiable Middle East rage. Sheik Yassin is called a poor crippled “holy man” who ordered the deaths of hundreds, as revered in the Arab World for his mass murder as Jerry Falwell is condemned in the West for his occasional slipshod slur about Muslims. Yet the hourly killing is perhaps not merely the wages of autocracy, but part of a larger grotesquery of Islamic fundamentalism on display. The Taliban strung up infidels from construction cranes and watched, like Romans of old, gory stoning and decapitations in soccer stadiums built with UN largess. And how many wacky Christian or Hindu fundamentalists advocate about the mass murder of Jews or promise death to the infidel? Does a Western leader begin his peroration with “O evil infidel” or does Mr. Sharon talk of “virgins” and “blood-stained martyrs?” Conspiracy theory in the West is the domain of Montana survivalists and Chomsky-like wackos; in the Arab world it is the staple of the state-run media. This tired strophe and antistrophe of threats and retractions, and braggadocio and obsequiousness grates on the world at large. So Hamas threatens to bring the war to the United States, and then back peddles and says not really. So the Palestinians warn American diplomats that they are not welcome on the soil of the West Bank—as if any wish to return when last there they were murdered trying to extend scholarships to Palestinian students.I am sorry, but these toxic fumes of the Dark-Ages permeate everywhere. It won’t do any more simply to repeat quite logical exegeses. Without consensual government, the poor Arab Middle East is caught in the throes of rampant unemployment, illiteracy, statism, and corruption. When there is news of 200 murdered in Madrid or Islamic mass-murdering of Christians in the Sudan, or suicide bombing in Israel, we no longer look for moderate mullahs and clerics to come forward in London or New York to condemn it. They rarely do. Will the realatives of the dead innocents now be inspired to wage violence as payback thus continuing the unending cycle.Where does it end? What is the solution? Is he just using "his boy" Kerry's nomination as his personal last stand in the presidential political arena, or is he truly helping the Democratic cause by attacking.I don't think he's less credible or respected than other Dems when it comes to the majority of swing voters, I don't think the majority of swing voters could name many Senior Senators, and I don't think his method is really any different than the Republicans.I think mostly he's just been around so long he's easy to label. He does have his own style that can rub some people the wrong way but I personally think the Dems need to stay on the offensive and Ted is good at that.Summing up a complex situation with a memorable sound bite, i.e. something "stupid and simplistic" is something the Bush administration has turned into an art form.Ted's just fighting fire with fire.

Criticism is valid, and especially necessary during war. What Powell should have attacked was the analogy, which was stupid and simplistic. Iraq is not Vietnam. What would be really helpful is if Ted Kennedy would just shut up. Right or wrong, he does more harm than good to the future prospects of Democrats whenever he opens his mouth, or shows up in a picture with Kerry. He turns off swing voters. He should be behind the scenes raising money and consolidating the base, and the Dems should find a more credible and respectable critic.

this message is to those of you who have recently expressed their feelings about the useless wars in vietnam and now in iraq. you think our troops did terrible things to the enemy in vietnam? you think our troops are dying for no reason in iraq. i say fuck you. you have no idea what those men have seen. just yesterday, 4 american civilians were killed in iraq, contractors who were there to help rebuild the country. they were attacked and killed. their bodies were drug through the streets and then hung from a bridge so the town could cheer about the dead americans. so they could spit on and throw rocks at their bodies. does that not anger you? does that not make you want something to be done? do you not feel like somone should react to this injustice? before that, hussein killed his own people in masses. he deserves the worst, and so do those insurgents in that country. as for the soldiers in vietnam, think about what they saw. every day they saw their friends and brothers die at the hands of the enemy. one day a local would bring them a knick-knack that they had made, and the next day they would throw a grenade at them. you would have a burning hatred and anger towards the enemy if you saw that every day as well. how did you feel when the twin towers fell? multiply that by 100. that's how those men felt after seeing that shit day in and day out for a year. it breaks a man down, and the only thing left is the base animal instinct of survival. wild and brutal survival, and anything to send a message to others could and would be done. as impossible as it is for you to understand, at least try. look at all sides of the story before you call something useless, or before you judge a man in his actions.
