Peaceful or otherwise, and past events indicate that not everyone who shows up is dedicated to peaceful protest, we regrettably live in a time where a security presence of some sort is required.A DC Green Party member quoted in the Post last week (sorry I don't have the direct reference) said that shutting down the city on Friday was a small price to be paid to make a point to the most powerful city on the planet. Well, just who's going to be most affected by this? Certainly not the elite, who can stay home and telecommute. The people who will be most affected are minority working folks who won't be able to get to work, who scrape by to provide for their kids, etc. Aren't these the very people whom these protesters claim to represent, both here and abroad? Shutting down the city may make a point to the "elites," but will alienate those whom the protesters claim to be representing. If the goal really is to create a mass movement, this is not the way to win friends and influence people.Or do the ends justify the means?
