"There's
a lot of money to pay for this, it doesn't have to be U.S. taxpayer
money, we are dealing with a country that can really finance it's
own reconstruction, and relatively soon." March 2003 to House
Appropriations Committee. So far the U.S. Senate has approved $87
billion of U.S. taxpayer money for operations in Iraq.
"I
would like to respond to recent commentary, some of it quite outlandish,
about what our postwar requirements might be in Iraq. I
am reluctant to predict anything about what the cost of a possible
conflict in Iraq would be, or what the possible cost of reconstructing
and stabilizing that country afterwards might be. But some of the
higher end predictions that we have been hearing recently, such
as the notion that it will take several hundred thousand U.S. troops
to provide stability in post-Saddam Iraq, are wildly off the mark."
- Feb. 2003 speaking to the House Budget Committee
"Fundamentally
we have no idea what is needed unless and until we get there on
the ground. This delicate moment when we are assembling a coalition,
when we are mobilizing people inside Iraq and throughout the region
to help us in the event of war, and when we are still trying, through
the United Nations and by other means, to achieve a peaceful solution
without war-is not a good time to publish highly suspect numerical
estimates." - Feb. 2003
"For
bureaucratic reasons, we settled on one issue, weapons of mass destruction,
[as justification for invading Iraq] because it was the one reason
everyone could agree on."
- Paul Wolfowitz, Vanity Fair interview, May 28, 2003
